How One <em>Myst</em> Fan Made Himself a Real-Life Linking Book



The classic PC game Myst was known for drawing people in to its massive, surreal world. But maker Mike Ando took a little piece of that world and drew it into ours. He made a lovingly authentic replica of the Linking Book that helps the main character — you — navigate the world.


Myst was a ground-breaking point-and-click adventure game created by Cyan Worlds, made of hundreds of beautifully rendered scenes whose combined size made the game so big that it needed a CD-ROM to play, back when many computers didn’t have them. It was the first breakout hit in PC gaming and from its release in 1993 it held the title of best-selling PC game until 2002 when The Sims surpassed it.


The game spawned four sequels, along with novels, music, and an MMO that is still online and being powered by donations from the fan base. The games have been widely ported and the game — once so huge that you needed special hardware to run it — is now available for download on iOS (among other places). In other words, it’s a pretty big deal.



At the core of Myst’s story was a mystical technology called Linking Books that pulled players into other realms, called Ages. They were these beautiful old tomes that, when opened, showed an animated preview of the Age to which you’d be linked.


“Ever since I first played the game, I always wanted my own linking book,” says Ando, “Of course, there was no way my old bulky 486 would fit within a book, but as time marched on technology advanced and computers became smaller. Eventually technology caught up and it was possible to shrink everything down to fit inside the book.”


Ando says his drive to make this project began six years ago when he learned where Cyan got the texture reference for the books — Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, Volume LIV, Issue 312, December 1876 to May 1877. “My mind hatched all sorts of plans about what I’d do once I had the book,” he says, “and finally I decided to set the bar as high as I could — all the Myst games, all playable, and playable well, even the 3-D ones at 30fps.”


To do this, Ando needed to perform two main feats. First, he needed to find the parts to make a computer that would fit in an extremely limited space. Then, he needed to restore the antique book, customize it to look like the ones from Myst, and gut it to make room for the compact computer that would power the game.



“Research was the main skill involved,” says Ando, “I spent hundreds of hours, literally, trying to find suitable components to meet all my requirements.”


To build the tiny computer that powers the Linking Book, Ando needed to find a X86 board that could fit inside. Most mobile devices run on ARM, but Ando wanted to run the original releases of each game, so porting wouldn’t do. It had to be X86.


“To give you an idea of how uncommon it is to shrink an X86 computer down this small,” he says, “the smallest X86 computer made by Apple, the Mac Mini, is 17 cm — this book is only 12 cm, plus I had to squeeze in my own power source and screen.”


The parts that made up the computer came from specialist vendors that ordinarily sell to aerospace and other niche enterprise customers. Ando ended up ordering a mixture of store-bought parts, and custom PCB layouts, soldering the whole thing together and switching out components between a bunch of boards to get the most efficient versions. He says he designed the touchscreen controller himself.


And as for the touchscreen itself? At one point in his search, he found himself talking to a vendor in China to arrange for a custom design. “His English skills were so poor I suggested we talk in Chinese and I used Google Translate, so I guess you could add that to my skills,” he says. “I suspect he just found one already to size and charged me as if they made it. If so, good for him — I couldn’t find one anywhere.”



For restoration and preparation of the book, Ando turned to Ian Bates, the president of the Australian Bookbinding Association. Bates handled the restoration of the cover, along with cutting the pages and embossing the book with the Myst logotype (but only after Ando had picked which of the several versions of the Myst font they should use).


If you find yourself gasping in horror at the idea that a book restorer would destroy a beautiful old book for a strange electronics project, Ando wants to assure you that nothing of value was lost. “The book I used is basically a cross between a Reader’s Digest & a gossip magazine and many of the articles are incomplete,” he says, “Today, books like this are sold to interior designers literally by the meter without any care given to their contents, author or title. Their main value rests on the aesthetics of their spine.”

Ang Lee talks about risks, spirituality of “Life of Pi”












NEW YORK (Reuters) – Gay cowboy drama “Brokeback Mountain” may have been considered a risky film to make, but director Ang Lee said his new movie, “Life of Pi,” a 3D exploration of faith about a boy stranded on a boat with a Bengal tiger, is his riskiest yet.


The film, which was released in U.S. theaters this week, is adapted from Yann Martel‘s best-selling novel of the same name and was once considered impossible to make.












Oscar-winning Taiwanese director Lee, 58, took on the laborious task of using computer-generated imagery to bring the sensational plot to the big screen, taking a year and a half just to edit the film together.


The director talked to Reuters about the film’s themes, technical barriers and casting an unknown actor in the lead.


Q. Why was “Life of Pi” considered unfilmable?


A. “Because you cannot make the tiger do everything you want to do, you have to use digital. A digital animal, up until two years ago, was not totally realistic yet, let alone in 3D, and then water is pretty difficult.”


Q. Was this your most difficult filming experience yet?


A. “Oh yes. And it was also the longest…there was the technical difficulty and then it is a big movie. And it was across continents, I finally decided to shoot most of it in Taiwan, but we also had to go to India to shoot for two to three weeks. Because you can’t fake Pondicherry, and Munnar. And then we have scenes in Canada.”


Q. But Brokeback Mountain was a risky film too?


A. “No, that wasn’t for me. At least when I made it, I thought it was strictly arthouse and few people would see it. And it’s a lot cheaper (to make). So I didn’t care…And then I got nervous, ‘Oh they are going to lynch me, making a gay cowboy movie, that will go into a shopping mall.’”


Q. It was only after you made it you realized that?


A. “Yes, I was afraid. I was looking around when I walked, when I would go home, to see if anybody was following me. Once it hit the shopping mall I was nervous, actually. My brother is a distributor in Taiwan and I told him not to buy it. He hates me to this day, he is still babbling about it.”


Q. Why choose unknown Suraj Sharma to play Pi?


A. “I wanted someone authentic, and no bad habits, that means you have to train them from the start. “


Q. Why did you replace Tobey Maguire and reshoot his scenes with the little-known Rafe Spall?


A. “It was a small part, and he is a big movie star. He is a good old friend of mine and he would do this for nothing, for me. But he is not doing anything (in the role), he is just sitting there listening most of the time. It becomes a little distracting I think.”


Q. How does the film explore spirituality?


A. “To me, faith can be elusive, but .. As a Taoist would say, ‘That’s the apple’s truth.’ The source of all the material comes from nothingness, illusion is working more on things you can prove. That’s the principle, the essence of life, it is actually an illusion, not immaterial. That’s worth pursuing. So illusion is not nothing. In a way, that is the truth.”


“Sometimes I feel (illusions) are more of life’s essence, I can trust them more than real life that is full of deceit and covering up.”


Q. Did exploring faith encourage you to make this?


“The book is fascinating, it talks about faith. But it didn’t make me believe in God or anything…I didn’t go to church or a temple after that. When I started making the movie, you do feel faith embody you and carry you through. But when I picked the subject, and chose to do the book, it was actually more storytelling in my mind. The value of storytelling. How people share a story. Because a story has structure, it has a beginning, middle and end. It seems to have meaning, where life has not.”


Q. Do you practice any religion?


A. “No, my mother is a baptized Christian, so she made me go to church every Sunday, and I prayed four times a day until I was 14. And at lunchtime kids at school would giggle at my praying…I stopped praying. And two weeks later, nothing happened to me, so I didn’t pick it up again.”


“I am not particularly religious. But I think we do face the question of where God is, why we are created and where does life go, why we exist. That sort of thing. And it is very hard to talk about it these days, because it cannot be proven. It is hard to discuss it rationally.”


Q. Do you consider yourself spiritual?


A. “I hate to think life is just facts and laws. And I am a filmmaker, I am a sensitive person, I like to think it is spiritual, so I like people to be more in that way. I think life without spirit is in the dark, it is absurd. Call it illusion or call it faith, whatever you call it, we have emotional attachment to the unknown. We yearn to find out. That is human nature. It can be, in a way, unrequited love, we don’t know. I don’t have a particular God I pray to, except sometimes a movie god.” (laughs)

Indian Prostitutes’ New Autonomy Imperils AIDS Fight





MUMBAI, India — Millions once bought sex in the narrow alleys of Kamathipura, a vast red-light district here. But prostitutes with inexpensive mobile phones are luring customers elsewhere, and that is endangering the astonishing progress India has made against AIDS.




Indeed, the recent closings of hundreds of ancient brothels, while something of an economic victory for prostitutes, may one day cost them, and many others, their lives.


“The place where sex happens turns out to be an important H.I.V. prevention point,” said Saggurti Niranjan, program associate of the Population Council. “And when we don’t know where that is, we can’t help stop the transmission.”


Cellphones, those tiny gateways to modernity, have recently allowed prostitutes to shed the shackles of brothel madams and strike out on their own. But that independence has made prostitutes far harder for government and safe-sex counselors to trace. And without the advice and free condoms those counselors provide, prostitutes and their customers are returning to dangerous ways.


Studies show that prostitutes who rely on cellphones are more susceptible to H.I.V. because they are far less likely than their brothel-based peers to require their clients to wear condoms.


In interviews, prostitutes said they had surrendered some control in the bedroom in exchange for far more control over their incomes.


“Now, I get the full cash in my hand before we start,” said Neelan, a prostitute with four children whose side business in sex work is unknown to her husband and neighbors. (Neelan is a professional name, not her real one.)


“Earlier, if the customer got scared and didn’t go all the way, the madam might not charge the full amount,” she explained. “But if they back out now, I say that I have removed all my clothes and am going to keep the money.”


India has been the world’s most surprising AIDS success story. Though infections did not appear in India until 1986, many predicted the nation would soon become the epidemic’s focal point. In 2002, the C.I.A.’s National Intelligence Council predicted that India would have as many as 25 million AIDS cases by 2010. Instead, India now has about 1.5 million.


An important reason the disease never took extensive hold in India is that most women here have fewer sexual partners than in many other developing countries. Just as important was an intensive effort underwritten by the World Bank and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to target high-risk groups like prostitutes, gay men and intravenous drug users.


But the Gates Foundation is now largely ending its oversight and support for AIDS prevention in India, just as efforts directed at prostitutes are becoming much more difficult. Experts say it is too early to identify how much H.I.V. infections might rise.


“Nowadays, the mobility of sex workers is huge, and contacting them is very difficult,” said Ashok Alexander, the former director in India of the Gates Foundation. “It’s a totally different challenge, and the strategies will also have to change.”


An example of the strategies that had been working can be found in Delhi’s red-light district on Garstin Bastion Road near the old Delhi railway station, where brothels have thrived since the 16th century. A walk through dark alleys, past blind beggars and up narrow, steep and deeply worn stone staircases brings customers into brightly lighted rooms teeming with scores of women brushing each other’s hair, trying on new dresses, eating snacks, performing the latest Bollywood dances, tending small children and disappearing into tiny bedrooms with nervous men who come out moments later buttoning their trousers.


A 2009 government survey found 2,000 prostitutes at Garstin Bastion (also known as G. B.) Road who served about 8,000 men a day. The government estimated that if it could deliver as many as 320,000 free condoms each month and train dozens of prostitutes to counsel safe-sex practices to their peers, AIDS infections could be significantly reduced. Instead of broadcasting safe-sex messages across the country — an expensive and inefficient strategy commonly employed in much of the world — it encircled Garstin Bastion with a firebreak of posters with messages like “Don’t take a risk, use a condom” and “When a condom is in, risk is out.”


Surprising many international AIDS experts, these and related tactics worked. Studies showed that condom use among clients of prostitutes soared.


“To the credit of the Indian strategists, their focus on these high-risk groups paid off,” said Dr. Peter Piot, the former executive director of U.N.AIDS and now director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. A number of other countries, following India’s example, have achieved impressive results over the past decade as well, according to the latest United Nations report, which was released last week.

Lining up even earlier for Black Friday becomes a shop priority









In a tradition that seems to take a bigger slice of Thanksgiving every year, hordes of deal-sniffing shoppers descended on Southland stores Thursday, elbowing their way in search of toys, video games and that time-honored Black Friday symbol: cut-rate television sets. As nightfall came, they huddled in long lines, clutching coupons and hatching shopping strategies.


Rebecca Abbott, 42, of Torrance had it down to a science Thursday night. The accountant said she was out the door of the local Toys R Us store in 20 minutes with a shopping cart full of Christmas gifts for her two daughters. 


Her fourth time shopping on Black Friday, Abbott had spent a few hours in Toys R Us the day before scoping out her plan of attack. The first item on her list: a Rockstar Mickey Mouse doll, normally priced at $59.99 but selling for just $19.99.





"You have to have a strategy for this Black Friday madness," she said as she headed for the door. "First-timers will walk around all day looking at deals," Abbott said. "I got in, grabbed my stuff and got out." Her cart was overflowing with large toys — primarily Barbie and Mickey Mouse items.

At a Wal-Mart in Panorama City, just after 8 p.m., "it was really crazy, but you could still walk," said Marya Huaman, 23, as she left the store with her dad, her two infant sons and three bags full of Fisher-Price toys.


"No, you couldn't," scoffed her father, Edward Huaman. "I didn't see anyone fighting, but they will be soon. This is madness."


Last year, Thanksgiving night was marred by a pepper spray "shopping rage" incident at a Wal-Mart in Porter Ranch that injured at least seven people and forced employees to evacuate part of the store. One person was hospitalized.


Los Angeles Police Cmdr. Andy Smith said Thursday that the night appeared to be running smoothly across Los Angeles. "In general, I think things have gone really well," he said. "It sounds like the stores have taken proper precautions and everyone is aware of the hazards of Black Friday."


After retailers last year moved the opening bell for Black Friday sales to midnight, this year there were even more customers eager to get a jump on the traditional kickoff to the holiday shopping season. Wal-Mart, Sears and Toys R Us began rolling out their door busters at 8 p.m. on Turkey Day, followed by Target at 9 p.m. Macy's, Kohl's and Best Buy were set to open at midnight.


A handful of chains such as Kmart and Old Navy also had daytime hours on Thursday. And online merchants were touting bargains all day and night.


About 147 million shoppers are expected this all-important holiday weekend, with more logging in for online specials by Cyber Monday, according to the National Retail Federation. In all, the trade group estimated that holidays sales will rise 4.1% this year, to $586 billion.


"Though the Black Friday tradition is here to stay, there's no question that it has changed in recent years," NRF Chief Executive Matthew Shay said in a statement.


Many shoppers were perfectly content to queue up. At Best Buy electronic stores across the Southland, people waited for hours — and sometimes days — in tents before the midnight opening.


But many workers were angry about spending Turkey Day away from loved ones.


Frustrated retail employees and families have taken to creating online petitions at Change.org to beg companies not to cut into Thanksgiving dinners. More than 20 online petitions have popped up in recent weeks. Lines grew throughout the afternoon and into the evening as anxious shoppers surveyed the competition in line.


Throughout Southern California there were reports of lines wrapped around stores. In Glendale, more than 750 shoppers were lined up outside the Target at the Galleria.


For shoppers who just couldn't wait until Thursday night — much less Black Friday — some retailers opened their doors all day on Thanksgiving.


The sales weren't quite as glorious as the Black Friday specials that stores promise to roll out later. But they were pretty good nonetheless, shoppers said.


JoAnne Garcia walked into Kmart in Burbank in search of a roasting pan in which to cook her turkey. She walked out 90 minutes later, having shelled out $491, including $329 for an RCA 39-inch LCD flat-panel TV.


"The roasting pan was $14.99," Garcia said, laughing at how much she spent as she rolled her cart to the parking lot.


To the 53-year-old aerospace machinist, shopping on Thanksgiving made perfect sense.


Standing near a store display touting "Freak Out Pricing," Garcia explained her theory about shopping while cooking. "You get up, throw your turkey in the oven, and you come back and it's all done."

Documents Show F.D.A.’s Failures in Meningitis Outbreak





Newly released documents add vivid detail to the emerging portrait of the Food and Drug Administration’s ineffective and halting efforts to regulate a Massachusetts company implicated in a national meningitis outbreak that has sickened nearly 500 people and killed 34.




In the documents, released on Tuesday in response to a Freedom of Information Act request, the agency would threaten to bring the full force of its authority down on the company, only to back away, citing lack of jurisdiction.


The company, the New England Compounding Center, at times cooperated with F.D.A. inspectors and promised to improve its procedures, and at other times challenged the agency’s legal authority to regulate it, refused to provide records and continued to ship a drug in defiance of the agency’s concerns.


Some of the documents were summarized last week by Congressional committees that held hearings on the meningitis outbreak. Republicans and Democrats criticized the F.D.A. for failing to act on information about unsafe practices at the company as far back as March 2002.


By law, compounding pharmacies are regulated primarily by the states, but the pharmacies have grown over the years into major suppliers of some of the country’s biggest hospitals. The F.D.A. is asking Congress for stronger, clearer authority to police them, but Republicans have said the agency already has enough power.


Records show that the agency was sometimes slow in pursuing its own inspection findings. In one case involving the labeling and marketing of drugs, the agency issued a warning letter to New England Compounding 684 days after an inspection, a delay that the company’s chief pharmacist complained was so long that some of the letter’s assertions no longer applied to its operations.


The agency said in a statement Wednesday that it “was not the timeline we strive for,” but that much of the delay was because of “our limited, unclear and contested authority in this area.” Because of litigation, it said, there was “significant internal discussion about how to regulate compounders.”


The agency first inspected the company in April 2002 after reports that two patients had become dizzy and short of breath after being injected with a steroid made by the company.


 On the first day of the inspection, Barry Cadden, the chief pharmacist, was cooperative, but the next day, the agency inspectors wrote, Mr. Cadden “had a complete change in attitude & basically would not provide any additional information either by responding to questions or providing records,” adding that he challenged their legal authority to be at his pharmacy at all.


The F.D.A. was back at New England Compounding in October 2002 because of possible contamination of another of its products, methylprednisolone acetate, the same drug involved in the current meningitis outbreak.


 While the F.D.A. had the right to seize an adulterated steroid, officials at the time said that action alone would not resolve the company’s poor compounding practices. In a meeting with Massachusetts regulators, F.D.A. officials left authority in the hands of the state, which “would be in a better position to gain compliance or take regulatory action,” according to a memo by an F.D.A. official summarizing the meeting.


 David Elder, compliance branch director for the F.D.A.’s New England District, warned at the meeting that there was the “potential for serious public health consequences if N.E.C.C.’s compounding practices, in particular those relating to sterile products, are not improved.”


 The company fought back hard, repeatedly questioning the F.D.A.’s jurisdiction. In a September 2004 inspection over concerns that the company was dispensing trypan blue, a dye used for some eye surgeries that had not been approved by the F.D.A., Mr. Cadden told the agency inspector that he had none in stock.


But in the clean room, the inspector noticed a drawer labeled “Trypan Blue,” which contained 189 vials of the medicine.


A few days later, Mr. Cadden was defiant. He told the agency that he was continuing to dispense trypan blue and that there was nothing in the law saying a compounder could not dispense unapproved products.


 The conversation turned testy. “Don’t answer any more questions!” Mr. Cadden told another pharmacy executive, according to the F.D.A.’s report.


Mr. Cadden rejected many of the assertions in the warning letter that finally came in December 2006. The next correspondence from the agency did not come until almost two years later, in October 2008, saying that the agency still had “serious concerns” about the company’s practices, and that failing to correct them could result in seizure of products and an injunction against the company and its principals.


It is not known whether any corrective actions were taken. The agency did not conduct another inspection until the recent meningitis outbreak.

European Companies Try Selling Bonds Directly to Customers


LONDON — Beth Foster was looking for a better way to invest part of her bonus than a savings account when she received an e-mail from her trusted online travel agent.


The privately owned travel start-up, called Mr & Mrs Smith, was selling a four-year bond directly to its customers, paying 7.5 percent interest in cash or 9.5 percent in Mr & Mrs Smith vouchers that could be used to book vacations.


With memories of a recent trip to Tuscany still fresh in her mind, Ms. Foster, 30, decided to invest just short of £5,000, or just under $8,000, and tapped into a growing market in Britain and the rest of Europe of companies seeking cash directly from individuals eager for higher returns in a low-interest environment.


“This is a much better and more exciting way to invest than a savings account,” said Ms. Foster, a strategist at Google in London. “It seemed as safe as anything else right now.”


 With interest rates at a record low of 0.5 percent in Britain and many savings account rates below the country’s inflation level, investors are jumping on products with higher returns, even if they are riskier. Companies are eager to explore new ways of financing as bank lending continues to be tight after the financial crisis.


Britain’s retail bond market, where companies large and small go directly to individual investors to raise money, has soared to more than $2 billion a year from about $360 million in 2010 (the figures do not include unregulated bonds issued by the likes of Mr & Mrs Smith, which are not tracked). That is still minuscule compared to the $214 billion in debt issued by companies in Britain this year and $3.7 trillion worldwide.


Similar retail bonds are not offered in the United States, where investors hungry for yield have piled into corporate debt through investment funds. But the retail bonds speak to a broader trend of companies tapping people for money more directly and introducing greater risk. The Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act that Congress passed this year allows “emerging growth” companies to sell stock with fewer restrictions and then report less information to their shareholders than was required from ordinary companies.


Concerns about Europe’s retail bonds are emerging, especially with the smaller companies. The bonds might appeal to customers of the companies because they feel they are supporting a start-up firm, but many are risky because they are unregulated and barely traded.


“It’s a bit worrying that people are prepared to take extra risk because they know or trust the company brand name,” said Howard Burchett, director of private clients at broker Charles Stanley. Mr & Mrs Smith said it planned to raise nearly $8 million with the bond and “cut out the big banks” while obtaining financing for an expansion plan. Leon, a sandwich shop here, plans to pay interest to its bond investors in salads and meatball wraps, while Hotel Chocolat, a British chocolate maker, has been paying bond investors in boxes of chocolate.


“Interest rates main institutions are offering are very low, there’s no trust in financial institutions and it’s pointless to keep money in the bank, so people are thinking, ‘Why not?’ ” Peter Harris, co-founder of Hotel Chocolat, said. The company so far has raised more than $6 million by selling bonds.


While Hotel Chocolat’s and Mr & Mrs Smith’s unregulated bonds are not publicly traded and are purchased directly from the company, another more liquid and regulated area of the retail bond market is also flourishing. In it, a growing number of larger and publicly traded utilities and financial services firms have been soliciting retail investors over the last year or so.


For these companies, retail bonds are usually a cheaper and faster way to raise money than a traditional corporate bond. They do not require the services of investment banks or expensive road shows to garner investor interest, and listing fees are lower. Companies market their retail bonds directly to their customers through leaflets and by post rather than to financial institutions.

Post-Sandy, Macy's Thanksgiving parade is balm for the N.Y. soul









When Sandy slammed the East Coast, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons, floats and costumes were spared from the devastation. And Thursday morning, New Yorkers' mood elevated along with the traditional helium-filled balloons as the parade kicked off, just as it had for more than eight decades.


The sun was shining and the atmosphere reportedly was festive as the 86th annual event got started at 9 a.m. Eastern. The temperature was 47 degrees -- nothing a New Yorker couldn't handle -- and, according to the Associated Press, attendees were in a parade mood, marveling at the giant balloons, performers and marching bands.


Some had camped out for a good spot, cozy in sleeping bags.

Among celebrities set for the parade: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Big Apple Circus, Flo Rida, Whoopi Goldberg, the Muppets and the cast of "Sesame Street." (If you're wondering whether Elmo will make an appearance amid the sex scandal surrounding puppeteer Kevin Clash, the character will reportedly be part of a "Sesame Street" float.)


New balloons set for this year were Hello Kitty, Elf on the Shelf and Papa Smurf -- as well as an unusual character known as KAWS' Companion. The black and gray figure that covers its face with its hands is by artist and former tagger Brian Donnelly, whose artistic alias is KAWS. The figure spurred a lot of stares in 2011 when it was installed at New York's Standard Hotel (pictures).


New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg stopped at the parade, according to the AP, where he praised those involved in the Sandy storm response, including police, firefighters, the armed services, volunteers and sanitation workers. He was then set to head to a firehouse in the Rockaways area of Queens, which was hit hard by the storm. 


The mayor's office, along with other organizations, were preparing Thursday to distribute 26,500 holiday meals in neighborhoods affected by Sandy.

Before the iPad, There Was the Honeywell Kitchen Computer



In the winter of 1969, the Neiman Marcus Christmas catalog offered to computerize your kitchen.


Cooking up a gourmet holiday meal will be a snap, the department store promised. Push a few buttons, and — presto! — a shiny orange-red, white, and black machine will compute the perfect five-course meal. No more silly culinary errors. The days of your wife slaving away in her Chanel apron will vanish into memory, and all those blinking lights will add to your holiday cheer.



All you needed was space for this 100-pound machine. And about $10,000. And a teletype. And a paper tape reader. And some serious engineering skills.


Needless to say, Neiman Marcus’ male-topian fantasy never materialized. The department store didn’t sell a single Honeywell Kitchen Computer, and it may never have intended to. The ad was no more than a publicity stunt, just like the stores ads for your very own Noah’s Ark and His-and-Hers airplanes in Christmas catalogs past.


The computer did exist. It was based on one of the Series 16 minicomputers from Honeywell, an early computer maker that would later help power the Arpanet, the forerunner to the modern internet. It’s just that this machine didn’t quite live up to the image of the modern computer that so often turned up in the popular imagination in the late ’60s and ’70s. It’s a bit like the talking Honeywell that turned up two years earlier in the Michael Caine spy flick The Billion Dollar Brain.


The Neiman Marcus ad was “a brilliant idea” and “wonderful publicity,” says Gardner Hendrie, who served as program manager for the Honeywell machine at the heart of the Kitchen Computer and is now a trustee of the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. “But I thought the packaging was probably a waste of time and wouldn’t sell.”


The Honeywell Kitchen Computer was really a 16-bit business machine called the H316 minicomputer. The H316 was available as a table-top machine or a machine you could mount on a rack, but Kitchen Computer was based on a version that was shoehorned into a futuristic, Jetsons-like pedestal. People did actually buy this machine, but not very many people.


“I don’t think it was a very popular style. Ninety-five percent of people wanted to build it into a [larger] system…. They were sticking them in racks,” says Dag Spicer, curator of the Computer History Museum, which is home to the only Kitchen Computer in existence. “The people buying these are engineers. They don’t care what it looks like.”


What they cared about were machines that could manage industrial, military, aerospace, research, and scientific projects — not sleek ines and a built-in writing desk. They wanted a minicomputer that could connect to a teletype and a paper tape reader.


An engineer would type a program in human-readable form, and the teletype would spit out the program on paper tape, translating the code into a series of punched holes and spaces. The paper tape reader could then read the holes and spaces as ones and zeros. The paper tape was “like a floppy disk, circa 1960. It’s a personal means of data storage,” Spicer says.


Without a teletype, a programmer would need to enter software into the Honeywell using the 16 buttons on the front panel, each of which corresponds to a bit. A pressed button represented a one, and un-pushed button signaled a zero. “The chances that you would get a program right doing it one bit at a time like that were so low,” Spicer said. “The first peripheral people bought for [the Honeywell] was a teletype so they could speak to it.”



Now try to imagine all that in late 1960s kitchen. A full H316 system wouldn’t have fit in most kitchens, says design historian Paul Atkinson of Britain’s Sheffield Halam University. Plus, it would have looked entirely out of place. The thought that an average person, like a housewife, could have used it to streamline chores like cooking or bookkeeping was ridiculous, even if she aced the two-week programming course included in the $10,600 price tag.


If the lady of the house wanted to build her family’s dinner around broccoli, she’d have to code in the green veggie as 0001101000. The kitchen computer would then suggest foods to pair with broccoli from its database by “speaking” its recommendations as a series of flashing lights. Think of a primitive version of KITT, without the sexy voice.


“What that means is you have to be able to decode the lights in your brain,” says Spicer of the Computer History Museum. Or at least remember the pattern and look up what it meant. At that rate, dinner might be ready next week. “The reason this is such a joke, a gag item, was that there was no real human-readable I/O [input/output] for it.”


It may not have worked in a practical sense, but at least it got people thinking about computers as consumer products. The concept of kitchen and home computers had already been circulating in popular culture by the time Neiman Marcus’ kitchen computer graced its Christmas catalog. In The Jetsons, which aired in the early 1960s, humans lived in a tech-happy world alongside robots and computers. In 1966, Westinghouse Corporation engineer Jim Sutherland built the Electronic Computing Home Operator (ECHO IV) to automate storing recipes, controlling home temperature, keeping track of household inventory, and conserving energy.


A year later, Philco-Ford Corporation released A.D. 1999, a short film that portrayed what life would be like at the end of the century. A scene in the kitchen of the future shows a family teleconferencing while mom plans dinner with the help of a flat-screen computer that knows how many calories dad is allowed to have. And after seeing the Neiman Marcus Kitchen Computer, Gordon Bell of Digital Equipment Corporation, a leading company in the minicomputer industry, sent out a congeries on the computer-in-the-home market in which he called the trend “inevitable.” And he was right.


The dedicated kitchen computer never quite happened. Since the Honeywell, there have been several attempts to revive the idea, like Electrolux’s Screenfridge and the HP Touch Smart, but none have really caught on. “In a way, the technology is in search of a problem,” said Spicer. “There is just this persistent meme of having computers in the kitchen, and somehow that’s going to create more leisure time.”


That said, this holiday season, so many of you will cook our meals with the help of iPads and laptops and smartphones, as you told us just last week. They’re smaller than the Honeywell. They’re cheaper. They don’t require a teletype. They’re not attached to your fridge. And you can take them outside the kitchen and use them for so many other things. Sometimes the future isn’t what a catalog tells us it will be. Sometimes, it’s better.

Rolling Stones aim to roll back years with reunion
















LONDON (Reuters) – The Rolling Stones return to the stage on Sunday for a mini-tour they hope will prove that advancing years and bad blood are no barriers to satisfaction for sellout crowds.


In a burst of activity to celebrate 50 years in business, the veteran British rockers with an average age of 68 have produced a photo book, written two songs, collaborated on a documentary, released a greatest hits album, played warm-up gigs in Paris and committed to five concerts.













They also faced questions about high ticket prices to the two gigs in London and three in the United States that have given some followers the impression they are more interested in banking cash than bashing out the hits.


Yet that has done little to dampen broad enthusiasm for their return to the big stage five years after the “A Bigger Bang” tour became the most lucrative in pop history at the time, earning nearly $ 560 million.


Adding to the sense of occasion, the full-time quartet of Mick Jagger on vocals, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood on guitar and Charlie Watts on drums will be joined by former members Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor at London’s O2 Arena on Sunday.


Even before they step out for the first of two gigs in the British capital, the question on every Stones fan’s lips is what more they have up their sleeves, amid hints of a full tour and the possibility of a new studio album.


“It would be nice to think that wouldn’t be it,” said Paul Sexton, a music journalist who has met and interviewed the band in the run-up to the latest concerts.


“Once the machine gets fired up again, it’s hard to imagine there won’t be more live shows to come. If these dates went well, you could imagine sufficient momentum for some kind of recording project.”


BICKERING, BUT NO DIVORCE


The Stones first played at the Marquee Club in London in 1962, and with a changing lineup that settled with today’s foursome the band who had to compete with the Beatles quickly became one of the biggest groups in pop history.


Their blues-infused output slowed from the 1980s, and some critics argue they peaked in the 1960s and 70s, but the Stones’ longevity and a catalogue of hits like “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Honky Tonk Women” have ensured the music world still cares.


Despite the promise of a major payout and another chance to enhance their legacy, the 50th anniversary celebrations were not always a certainty.


Jagger and Richards have bickered in the past and were at it again recently with Richards calling the charismatic frontman “unbearable” amid a stream of insults in his 2010 memoir “Life”.


He eventually apologized, clearing the way for the reunion.


“If you was married to somebody for 50 years, you can have your little spats here and there, and we don’t mind having them in public occasionally,” the guitarist told Rolling Stone magazine. “We can’t get divorced – we’re doing it for the kids!”


The Stones will play two gigs at the O2 Arena, where tickets cost 95 to 950 pounds ($ 1,500) for a VIP seat, before crossing the Atlantic for a show at Barclay Center, Brooklyn on December 8 and two at the Prudential Center, Newark on December 13 and 15.


Jagger has been quick to defend the pricing, saying that the shows were expensive to stage and tickets being traded on secondary sites for greater than their face value did not mean more money for the band.


As to what the five concerts could lead to, Richards said in a recent interview: “My experience with the Rolling Stones is that once the juggernaut starts rolling, it ain’t gonna stop.”


Jagger and Richards are the only two members of the Stones who were there at its inception in 1962. Watts joined in early 1963 and Wood was recruited in the mid-1970s to replace Mick Taylor when he left.


They are widely acknowledged as the greatest rock and roll band in history, producing more than 20 studio albums, selling an estimated 200 million copies, conquering the United States and charting the social and sexual mores of their time.


Their longevity is all the more surprising given their reputation for living in the fast lane. Wood is in his third year of sobriety after struggling with alcohol addiction and Richards said he is drinking less and “gave up smack” (heroin).
